What made you decide to try coaching in the first place?
I was in a career that I had fallen in to out of circumstance rather than being passionate about. Over the years I was given more responsibility in areas such as HR and Finance. I was overworked, yet bored and I wanted some changes in my life but didn't want to end up in the same situation again - I wanted to find the right path for me. I always wanted to build a career for myself but I was at the point of losing my enthusiasm altogether, and as someone who is usually very driven and motivated I needed some help to get me through that challenge so I turned to Amy.
What was life and work like before coaching? Can you describe to me your situation when we first met?
I was in a role that felt like it was going nowhere, regularly working overtime most of my weekends, busy but bored. I also had someone in my life who was not supportive of me being career orientated, which caused me a lot of confusion. I already had one masters degree that I loved so much and I wanted something for my career that I could be as excited and passionate about, but I didn't know what that was going to be. Once Amy helped me figure this out, I started working towards it by studying a second masters degree in Data Science, and went back to Amy again when it was time for me to make that leap to the new career.
What did you gain or learn through the coaching process?
Firstly, I learned to accept that it's ok for me to be career focused and to gain a lot of satisfaction from my work. Through our sessions, I also learned how to identify what I enjoy and find fulfilling, which helped me identify the kind of career path that will suit me best. And in my most recent work with Amy, we did some intensive interview preparation so that I could understand how my previous experiences related to my new career, practice how to present these in the correct format, and have the confidence that I needed.
What results have you experienced from coaching? What are you doing now, and how do you feel about it?
After not attending a new interview for nearly 18 years, I was successful in the first one. I start my new career in 2 weeks as a Digital Data Lead within the Marketing Department. The role will involve a complete change of industry, and I am so excited about it! I can't wait to get started because there is so much scope for learning and career development. I feel motivated, my enthusiasm is back, and I can't thank Amy enough for the help she gave me in this!
What advice would you give to someone who relates to your story and is thinking about coaching?
My advice is to invest in yourself - take the time to understand what you enjoy, what your strengths are, and what feels meaningful to you. Don't let others dictate what you should do with your life or how you should feel about your career, because its your journey! The more you understand yourself, the clearer it becomes which path will be fulfilling and align with who you are.
Looking ahead, what are your hopes or goals for the future?
I am really excited to learn more about my new industry and workplace, and can't wait to see where this new career, and move takes me!
